Mavrican International Designs

I know this may sound crazy but… I found this company making Tantric Chairs and I think there may be an opportunity in sharing these designs with South Africans. And so began a wonderful journey into the e-commerce space, a new challenge for the nascent company.

After initial enquiries, the directors revelled in the opportunity to embark on an adventure to the USA to meet the designer and President of Tantra Chair.

An instant connection made the decision to enter a 10yr partnership a no-brainer for all parties. The agreement ratified Mavrican’s right to produce the American company’s designs under license in South Africa.

The agreement has subsequently ended however the relationships remain strong – the parties consider themselves lifelong friends.

In order to maintain total quality control over production, the directors elected to commission their own factory in Johannesburg and Paul spent some time in Arizona, learning to make the perfect chair.

It wasn’t long before the opportunity to leverage the group’s reputation and connections within the Hospitality sector revealed itself. Restaurant furniture and reupholstery added another string to the group’s ability to provide turnkey solutions to the industry.

The production of the Tantra Chair necessitated the import of the specialised covering. The versatile covering is ideal for hospital environments, a quality of product not available in South Africa. Another opportunity… Tjaart was nominated to fly to New York to negotiate a deal with the supplier, opening the door to provide new furniture and reupholster existing furniture in the healthcare space.

Mavrican exited the furniture business late 2019, leaving with great memories and a ton of experience.
